College Principal experiences day as an apprentice

mechanicAS part of National Apprenticeship Week, Preston College Principal Willie Mills, yesterday visited an apprenticeship employer to sample a day in the life of an apprentice.

Willie spent time working on a vehicle in the workshop at David Ball Motors while being shown the ropes by owner David Ball and Preston College apprentices Jack and Michael Ball. An assessor from the College was also on hand to judge the principal's performance.

Speaking about apprenticeships and the specially arranged visit, Willie said: "Preston College is proud to take part in National Apprenticeship Week, and I was glad to be able to get involved and see what it is like for apprentices studying at Preston College and working with local employers.

"Both Jack and Michael look likely to succeed in their aims and they have been given a fantastic opportunity with David Ball motors.

"Apprenticeships will not work without dedicated and committed employers like David giving young people the opportunity to develop their skills and experience with support and commitment."

As part of the arrangement, Michael and Jack will job shadow Willie in his job as Principal at the College.

National Apprenticeship Week is run by the National Apprenticeship Service and runs all this week with various activities taking place across the country.

Preston College is also holding an Apprenticeship Awareness Day on Wednesday February 3, from 1pm-8pm at the Fulwood Campus for all those interested in studying as an apprentice, or businesses wanting to know more about employing an apprentice.
